THREE REASONS YOU ONLY WEAR 20 PERCENT OF YOUR WARDROBE

October 12, 2016

It is common knowledge that most women only wear 20% of their wardrobes, yet have full wardrobes. Although most of us find ourselves in this position, we have no idea how we got to this point in the first place and more importantly, how to get out of this conundrum. This post explores why most of us only wear 20% of our wardrobes and how to fix this problem.

THE THREE REASONS YOU ONLY WEAR 20 PERCENT OF YOUR WARDROBE

1. WARDROBE AND LIFESTYLE MISMATCH

It is sometimes easy to get carried away with shopping; buying items of clothing we see advertised in magazines or blogs. Yet, while we may love some of these pieces, they may not necessarily work for our current lifestyle. For example, owning  80% of ‘going out’ dresses when you work from home is a definite guarantee that you will  not wear much of your wardrobe.

The Fix: Always ensure that whatever new items of clothing you buy is applicable to your current lifestyle and will be worn at least three times that month.

2. DISORDERLY WARDROBE ARRANGEMENT

How we arrange the clothing in our wardrobes impacts on whether or not we wear them frequently. If our clothing is arranged with no real order, chances are we will struggle to wear most of the pieces in our wardrobe.

The Fix: Ensure that most of the clothing you wear on a regular basis is put on hangers in your wardrobe (rather than folded). It is also important to arrange your wardrobe according to clothing types. For example, tops should be kept separately from trousers, dresses, etc. It also helps to hang clothing according to colours. This makes creating outfits a lot easier.

3. LACK OF PLANNING

Some people may argue that dressing should be spontaneous, however, from past experience, this doesn’t always work. When we don’t plan our outfits in advance, we risk wearing the same 20% of clothing we wear most times. We would also end up with an outfit that doesn’t necessarily work for the occasion.

The Fix: Plan in advance- Explore your wardrobe and create your outfit before you get dressed. This could be the night before or even an hour before you have to get dressed. This way, you will have put some thought into your outfit and allowed yourself enough time to experiment and be creative.
