A Toxic wardrobe is a cluttered wardrobe. It is a wardrobe full of clothing, shoes and accessories that are underused and unworkable. I used to be very guilty of having a toxic wardrobe and only wearing 10% of my wardrobe. Yet, I would constantly buy clothing, shoes and accessories. I always wondered where they disappeared to every-time I was looking for an outfit to wear out! I would exclaim in horror; "I have nothing to wear!"at which point my husband would look up at me completely confused. "But, your wardrobe is full, and you buy stuff all the time!", at which point I would fall out with him!

Copy cat dressing- Copying exactly what you see in magazines or media. Instead of using inspiration to tailor it to your own personal style and lifestyle.
Accumulating an excessive, non-workable wardrobe- Having clothing and accessories in your wardrobe that you don’t use.

The negative impact of a toxic wardrobe can be physical, functional and psychological. The negative impact on our health and well-being includes the following:
The overwhelming presence of a cluttered wardrobe depletes energy levels.
A cluttered wardrobe causes stress and anxiety. Research shows that when the physical environment interferes with achieving your objectives, it fuels stress. Stress limits motivation, performance and social interaction.
The health risks of stress include: heart disease, insomnia, obesity, suppressed immune system and depression.
Causes allergies by being exposed to a build up of dust and mould.
It produces feels of guilt and hopelessness when your debt is a result of excessive shopping.
HOW TO PREVENT AND OVERCOME WARDROBE TOXICITY
Be organised: Cull your wardrobe after every season- Come up with a suitable number of items you want to have in your wardrobe for each season. Remove clothing and accessories that you don’t love, are too big/small, are the wrong styles and colours and do not work for your current lifestyle. Take these to charity or keep in storage for a more suitable season.
Love your wardrobe. Your wardrobe should only have clothing and accessories that you love and are functional for your current wardrobe. If you don’t love your wadrobe, do something about it.
Write a shopping list before you go out shopping based on gaps in your wardrobe. Be very strict with your purchases and stick to your budget.
Forget trends. Buy what works for your body shape, your colouring and your lifestyle according to your personal style.
Be the person in control of your style and wardrobe. Use magazines and media only to get inspiration for your own personal style.
