I have overslept. I jump out of bed and open the blinds…expectant of a calm, dry day. It’s the best I can hope for in winter. I am in Scotland after all. I am disappointed by what I see, dull, rainy and windy weather. I can see that the weather will not be playing ball today. Despite this, I remind myself that I have something to be grateful for. You see, I have a very beautiful view from my bedroom window of pure nature. I practically see the seasons change before my eyes every morning through this window. I like it.
If there is one lesson that living in Scotland has taught me, it’s to not let outside influences affect your mood, and your life, including the weather. Waking up to horrible weather in winter, can easily be depressing, if we allow it to, yet fun, if we choose to be creative and use every day as an opportunity to enjoy life; perhaps not in the same way as the summer months, but in life enhancing ways non-the –less.
Here are my top three extremely simple ways to make the most of your winter days:
INTRODUCE COLOUR TO YOUR OUTFIT
According to psychology, certain colours can enhance how we feel, whilst certain colours can make us look and feel worse off. Be conscious when selecting colours, and ensure you wear colours or shades you feel good in, especially in winter when you need that extra boost. Here is nothing wrong with wearing neutral colours such as black, navy, camel and beige. However adding a splash of colour in any form such as in a bag, scarf, shoes or coat can make a huge difference to how you feel that day. Brighten up your winter with some colour!
When our creativity is stalled, we tend to feel out of balance and less excited about life. Being creative is food for the soul. Creativity of any form (such as cooking, writing, creative reading, crafts, painting, drawing, singing, drumming, decorating, applying make-up, putting an outfit together, etc) will help you feel great about your life even in winter. Whatever you create does not have to be market ready. Just do it for you- for your own sanity!
ARRANGE TO DO SOMETHING YOU CAN LOOK FORWARD TO
An event, holiday, overnight stay or a simple dinner can do the trick to break up the winter and make it more enjoyable. For example, you can book dinner at a restaurant where you can dress up, look your best and have good company. A combination of some nice food, wine and good banter will lift your spirits and make your winter months more enjoyable. The simple act of booking a holiday, even if it’s a few months from now, can make your winter more bearable. Hope is powerful, and hope alone could get your through the winter.
Many of you will be wondering why I am holding balloons in the middle of a shopping centre in these images. Well, let me explain: These images were taken as promotional images for an event I was hosting in Glasgow. We decided to use the balloons to add some playfulness and colour to the whole theme. I had so much fun holding the balloons and playing with them. It’s great to be childlike once in while.
I loved the bright colours so much I decided to share them with you. I hope they brighten up your day!
